Programme Notes

In this programme Flinders Quartet illuminates the development of the string quartet through pieces that each in their unique way were a revolutionary approach to the genre.  Mozart’s K 546 is a bridge between Baroque technique and Classical expression and enchants with intricate counterpoint showing his mastery of the fugue form.  The fourth work in Beethoven’s Opus 18 - while it shows the influence of Haydn and Mozart - exhibits what will become Beethoven’s characteristic emotional intensity and ominous tone.  The concert ends with the flourish that is Beethoven’s profound masterpiece, Opus 127 which represents a shift to a more expansive, reflective and sometimes unconventional form.
